A crippled 23rd-century starship is stranded in 1886. Without the help of a disgraced ex-cavalryman, its crew may never survive the American West.

After a catastrophic failure leaves the starship USS Vanguard in a decaying orbit, First Officer Tamyra Corbett faces an impossible mission. Burdened with a tarnished record and a dying ship, she leads a team to the Arizona Territory to find and extract the vital resource needed to keep them in the sky. Her only landing site: smack in the crosshairs of the bloody final days of the Apache Wars.

In the shadows of the Santa Rita Mountains, disgraced former cavalryman John "Mac" McAllister wants only one thing: to be left alone. Forced out of Tucson by a vengeful commanding officer, he earns a solitary living panning for gold until strange miners arrive up-canyon with impossible tools and technology not of this world.

Mac had intended to mind his own business. But when an Apache war party ambushes the vulnerable strangers, standing aside is no longer an option.

Thrown into an undeclared war between desperate spacers, Geronimo’s renegades, and the ruthless Army captain hunting all of them down, Mac must help Corbett's crew survive long enough to save their ship.
